In 2016 my cohorts in Master Speakers of Austin (an advanced Toastmasters club) convinced me to compete in a speech contest. At the time I agreed mostly because it seemed like something fun to try, but I didn't actually expect to win. To my surprise, I did win, and with my friends' help, I continued up to the Division level for International Speech, where I took home the third place prize.
I found that I enjoy the challenge of competition, especially because it forces me to become a better speaker and evaluator. Since that first International contest in 2016, I've also competed in Evaluation and Table Topics contests.
